Muslim
Workers Win on Prayer Rights
On Aug. 9, THE STAR TRIBUNE
REPORTED THAT THE US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has found
reasonable cause that Cargill managers violated the Civil Rights Act by refusing
to allow Somali American Muslim workers to pray during their breaks at its
meatpacking plant in fort Morgan,Colo.
This determination,
reached on aug. 3, could lay the groundwork for a federal discrimination
lawsuit should Cargil fail to seek a settlement agreement with the 140 fired
workers. Only a small fraction of the thousands of discrimination charges filed
with the federal government each year gain the commission’s backing.
